Erwin came home from the hospital one year ago this week (two and a half months after her birth—which tells you exactly how long I have been procrastinating the writing of this update, which was to celebrate her first birthday). She is not quite walking yet, but she does not let that slow her down. Crawling gets her where she wants to go, and if something is too high, well, that is what parents are for. She is cruising around furniture and climbing stairs, backing up off of the couch and the bed by herself, emptying kitchen shelves of pots and pans, pulling all the shoes off of the shoe rack, taking wet laundry off of the drying rack and throwing it on the floor, picking up ladybugs and eating them (she spits out their wing covers, that is how I know), grabbing food off of her parent's plates, spitting food out onto her hand and smearing it in her hair or on her hat, throwing things on the floor, throwing things on the floor, throwing things on the floor. Life is good.
Erwin enjoys playing with Woodrow the cat who is very tolerant and enjoys the attention (any attention). He purrs and rolls onto his back as Erwin clambers all over him with, I am glad to say, increasing gentleness. She enjoys coming to judo classes and watching her parents work out; however she prefers to be on the tatami too, so that she can crawl over to people and jump on them. Erwin loves being outside, crawling in the grass, swinging on swings, wheelbarrow rides and long walks. Erwin likes going to the Early Years Centre to play with all the other children. She has started to point to distant objects, such as tractors or canada geese, as well as small, mobile objects such as houseflies. Erwin loves bathtime.
Erwin does not like getting out of the tub at the end of a bath, or holding onto our fingers to help her walk (if she can't do it by herself, she will not do it at all). She does not like mashed potatoes (or potatoes for that matter), nor her car seat, diaper changes, or mittens.
Erwin has increased her vocabulary:
"yum, yum" = good food, hungry, more food
"né né" = nurse
"p. p. p." or "up" = pick me up
"mama" = Mom, pay attention to me, pick me up, I am hungry, my diaper needs changing, lets play, I need reassurance, etc. She will say this word to Mom or Dad.
"papa" = Sylvain
She can spot her Papa across a busy hallway well before her Mom does.
Erwin's original due date was November 17th, 2008. For a little munchkin who is technically not even one year old yet, she is doing very well. We are very lucky to be able to share each day with such a wonderful little person.
Coming soon
